Royal Hamam’s Taj Collection was inspired by the majestic and awe-inspiring architectural feat that is the Taj Mahal, built between 1631-1653, and which stands by the banks of the Yamuna River, in Agra, India. The collection was equally inspired from feelings evoked at the Taj Mahal; standing beneath the minarets and domes, the milky whiteness of the marble, the endlessness of tiny precious & semi-precious stones, embedded in the fascia, it is as if time has created a deeply magical, pink hazed object of desire. The Taj is also representative of India; the disparate, diverse country which in so many ways showcases the darkest and lightest aspects of humanity. The Taj took approximately 22 years to build, by over 22,000 people, some of whom lost their lives in the process. However the Taj is remembered more so for the passion behind the project; the fairytale love affair that created the vision. The reigning Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan had lost his bride, Mumtaz Mahal in childbirth, and mourned her so deeply and soulfully, that he was driven to create the most spectacular mausoleum in her honour. Each time I visit the Taj Mahal, it offers something different, it seems changed; different light, different sounds, different angles. Maybe this is the story of India too; with all her colour; shades both light and dark. Perhaps it is the viewer’s own position in time that largely dictates how one sees India, the Taj, everything… Royal Hamam’s Taj Collection has been a deeply personal design experience, and has been an utterly freeing and passionate project. The architectural and screen-like forms that characterize the collection feel extremely exotic to me, and the forms feel bold, simple and elegant. I hope each piece of Royal Hamam’s Taj Collection is thoroughly enjoyed. AR015203
